General Secretary's Back to School Message 2012

Dear Friends,

As the new 2011 - 2012 school year begins, it is important to remember the reason and purpose of our studies.  From kindergarten to post-graduate studies, the purpose of our efforts and learning should remain the same - to glorify God.  The Author of Life has given each of us gifts that we were created to develop.  We were given the ability to read, write, think, ponder, understand, and even create so that we can grow to perfection.

The hard part is that God has also given us the gift of free will.  He has allowed us to decide how we spend our time and our day.  The trouble is that there are many distractions that draw us away from our studies.  Our Savior, Jesus Christ, told a parable about three servants who were entrusted with money, which were talents.  Two servants faithfully worked to increase their holdings, while the third became lazy and did nothing.  The lazy servant was cast out because he had not been faithful to the task that had been given to him.

You each have been given a task, to study.  Whatever you are studying, make sure that you put your heart and mind into it.  Enjoy it, because God has given you this gift which you should not waste. We should remember the example of the early Christian Fathers and Mothers of the Church who never stopped learning, because to them ignorance was unacceptable.

Finally, remember that the Scriptures explain that the beginning of wisdom is fear (reverence) of God.  Thus, make sure that in all your endeavors, you keep God as your rock on which to build on.

God Bless!
